The Final Trim: Bruce Hollis retires from Ullman Sails

After nearly four decades shaping the world of competitive sailing, Bruce Hollis is setting his sights on a well-earned new horizon. As he prepares to retire, we take this moment to celebrate the incredible legacy he leaves behind, not just at Ullman Sails, but across the global sailing community.

Bruce has always been more than a sail designer. He is a craftsman, a mentor, a visionary, and above all, a sailor at heart. With close to 40 years of experience in sailmaking, racing, and boat building, Bruce’s journey reads like a blueprint of excellence. From his work on America’s Cup campaigns to 18-Footer development classes, from a victorious Sydney to Hobart to countless successful IRC and ORC race programs, his fingerprints are on sails that have carried teams to the front of the fleet all over the world.

At Ullman Sails, Bruce has been a central figure in our evolution. As Director of Design, he led the Advanced Design Team with a steady hand and a sharp eye, pioneering material innovation and performance refinement. He shaped some of the brand’s most advanced sail solutions for TP52s, high-performance multihulls, and youth one-designs, always blending cutting-edge technology with practical, race-proven insight. Whether coordinating international design workflows or fine-tuning details for a local regatta, Bruce brought the same level of thoughtfulness and dedication to every sail that bore his name.

His approach to design has always been deeply human. He listened first. He believed in collaboration, not just among designers and engineers, but with the sailors themselves. He knew that the best sail wasn’t just fast on paper, it was fast for the team using it, in their conditions, with their goals in mind.

Bruce’s legacy is not just in the sails that have crossed finish lines, but in the generations of sailors and designers he’s inspired along the way. He leaves behind not only a body of work marked by excellence, but a culture of curiosity, humility, and high standards that continues to shape our team.

As Bruce steps back from the day-to-day, we send him off with immense gratitude, deep respect, and the warmest wishes for the new chapters ahead. Fair winds, Bruce, and thank you.
