Ullman sails Newport Beach
The 60th Congressional Cup
Long Beach Yacht Club hosted a landmark edition of one of sailing’s most prestigious match racing events, the 60th Congressional Cup, held April 30 to May 4, 2025. As the longest-running match racing regatta in North America and a staple of the World Match Racing Tour, this diamond anniversary brought world-class sailors, intense tactical battles, and for anyone watching, an edge-of-your-seat experience. It served as Stage 3 of the 2025 World Match Racing Tour.
The racing throughout the week was fiercely competitive, with shifty breeze and tight courses putting teams to the test in everything from boat handling to tactical finesse. Round robins saw high drama and photo-finish duels, where every dial-down, luff, and penalty call counted. ConCup veterans and newcomers alike delivered thrilling moments, pushing the limits of the Catalina 37 fleet.

After years of chasing the title, Eric Monnin and his team, Capvis Swiss Match Racing, claimed their first Crimson Blazer in a hard-fought final against defending champion, USA’s Chris Poole. The best of five, final was big on tactics, with aggressive pre-start maneuvers, super close mark roundings, and relentless boat on boat duels. Monnin's comeback in the fifth and deciding race, capitalizing on a penalty and a mistake by Poole, was a stunning display of composure under pressure and precision.
Beyond the crimson blazer, the regatta proved its value as a development ground for future champions. Australia’s Cole Tapper, age 22, and his team from the CYCA Youth Sailing Academy delivered an incredible performance, leaping from 8th place last year to a strong 3rd. Showcasing amazing crew work, bold moves and finesse to keep the older guys on their toes.

Ullman Sails Newport Beach has played a proud behind-the-scenes role in the Congressional Cup for many years. The Ullman Sails team has been servicing the Congressional Cup’s Catalina 37 fleet, helping to ensure every boat is race ready and equal, laying the foundation for the level playing field this event is known for. It’s an honor to support such a storied regatta and to help deliver the conditions for world-class match racing.
The 60th Congressional Cup once again proved why it's considered a crown jewel in match racing, showcasing elite talent, fierce rivalries, and unforgettable performances. We’re proud to be part of this legacy and we’re excited to watch the rest of the World Match Racing Tour.
