Setting Sail: Gary Swenson & Rossi Acree retire from Ullman Sails Ventura

After over four decades at the helm of Ullman Sails Ventura, Gary Swenson is setting his sights on a new horizon: retirement. And joining him on this next chapter is his longtime teammate, trusted right-hand, and friend, Rossi Acree. Together, Gary and Rossi built more than just sails, they built a legacy.

Gary started his loft in the late 70s and in 1984 Gary’s journey with Ullman began, driven by a deep love for sailing and an uncompromising commitment to the craft. Under his leadership, the Ventura loft became a go-to for sailors up and down the coast. From custom manufacturing to expert repairs and recuts, Gary’s hands-on approach and racing knowledge helped shape sails, and careers that stood the test of time.

On the water, Gary’s accomplishments speak volumes. Sailing his Peterson 34, Tonka, he captured wins in both the 2021 Dave Wall Series and the 2024 Island Series. But his reputation was never just about racing, it was about doing things the right way.

Behind the scenes and alongside him from nearly the very beginning was Rossi Acree. Since 1979, Rossi has been at the heart of the Ventura loft; sailmaker, IT support, shipping expert, office coordinator, you name it, Rossi did it. Her steady presence, versatility, and deep knowledge of the day-to-day kept the loft running smoothly for decades. For clients and coworkers alike, Rossi has been a trusted problem-solver and a constant source of support.

As they both retire, their departure marks the end of an era—but not the end of their impact. The loft, the community, and the thousands of sails bearing their imprint are reminders of what dedication, teamwork, and care can build.

Fair winds, Gary and Rossi. You’ve more than earned them.
