Science without Borders
One Island One Ocean believes that the ocean has no borders, and neither should the science that protects it.
As explored in Mustang Survival’s One Ocean: Science Without Borders, the challenges facing our oceans cannot be solved by one country, one organisation or one discipline alone. Ocean currents ignore political boundaries, marine wildlife migrates across continents and the health of one coastline is often connected to another thousands of miles away.
The organisation works to unite researchers, sailors and local communities in collecting valuable ocean data, advancing marine education and creating opportunities for people to become active participants in conservation. Through collaboration, they are building a broader understanding of our changing oceans while inspiring stewardship in the next generation.
It’s a philosophy that resonates strongly within the sailing community. Whether racing in California, crossing to Bermuda or competing in the Baltic Sea, sailors experience firsthand that we all share one interconnected ocean.
“The ocean doesn’t recognise borders, and neither should our commitment to protecting it.”
WHY THIS MATTERS TO SAILORS
Every sailor has a story about the sea.
We remember the perfect breeze, the unexpected squall, the sunrise after a long offshore watch and the wildlife that appears when we’re miles from land. These experiences create a lasting appreciation for the environments that make sailing unlike any other sport. Healthy oceans aren’t simply important for marine ecosystems, they are essential to the future of sailing itself.
Clean coastlines, thriving marine life and resilient ocean systems help preserve the places where we train, race and explore. As sailors, we spend countless hours reading weather patterns, understanding currents and working with the forces of nature rather than against them. That connection gives us both a unique perspective and an opportunity to be ambassadors for the oceans we love.
At Ullman Sails, innovation has always been inspired by time on the water. Every sail is designed with performance in mind, but every mile sailed also reinforces just how remarkable—and fragile—the marine environment can be. We're proud that One Island One Ocean's expedition vessel is equipped with our Endurance Series sails and an Axia Blue Line spinnaker, designed to deliver the reliability, durability and dependable performance needed for extended offshore voyages and demanding scientific expeditions. It's a partnership built on a shared commitment to exploring, understanding and protecting the oceans that connect us all.
A SHARED RESPONSIBILITY
World Ocean Day isn’t just a date on the calendar. It’s a reminder that protecting our oceans is an ongoing commitment shared by everyone who enjoys life on the water.
Through education, scientific research and community engagement, organisations like One Island One Ocean are helping ensure that future generations inherit healthy oceans and vibrant marine ecosystems.
As sailors, we have the privilege of experiencing these environments from a unique perspective. Supporting the organisations that work tirelessly to protect them is one way we can give back to the waters that have given us so much.
Whether you’re racing offshore, cruising with family or simply watching the sunset from the dock, we are all connected by one ocean.

We’re proud to support the work of One Island One Ocean and the passionate individuals dedicating their time to understanding and protecting our marine environment.
Their efforts help ensure that the oceans we race on, explore and cherish today remain healthy for generations of sailors to come.
If this story has inspired you, we encourage you to learn more about their mission and, if you’re able, consider making a donation.
Every contribution, big or small, helps fund vital scientific research, educational programmes and conservation initiatives that safeguard the waters connecting us all. Together, we can help protect the world’s greatest racecourse.
