Before your Next Sail: Thinking about treating your boat?
Here’s what to consider before placing the order
Thinking about treating your boat? Here's what to consider before placing that order.
It's that time of year when treating yourself starts to sound like a particularly good idea. A holiday somewhere warm, a little something you've had your eye on, or perhaps a brand-new sail for the boat.
And let's face it, few things are quite as satisfying as hoisting a crisp new sail for the first time.
But before you start choosing cloth, comparing quotes and imagining those extra knots of boat speed, there are a few things worth considering.
Because the best sail isn't necessarily the most expensive or technically advanced.
It's the one that's right for your boat, your crew and the sailing you actually do.
FIRST, HOW DO YOU SAIL?
A weekend racing boat has different demands from one heading offshore for weeks at a time. A short-handed cruising couple might prioritise easy handling, while a fully crewed racing boat can make the most of a more demanding sail inventory.
Think about your usual conditions, your crew and what you'd most like to improve. These details help your sailmaker recommend the right design, materials and construction.

HEADSAILS: BIGGER ISN'T ALWAYS BETTER
A smaller working jib, around 100–110%, can make tacking and handling easier, particularly in stronger conditions. A 135% genoa offers more area for moderate winds, while a 150% genoa provides additional power in lighter air but requires more handling.
The right choice depends on your rig, sailing conditions and crew.
If you're using a furling headsail, consider its shape when partially furled and the UV protection needed when it's left on the forestay.
WHAT ABOUT DOWNWIND?
Sometimes your upwind sails are doing their job, but you're missing something when the breeze moves.
A symmetrical spinnaker, asymmetrical spinnaker or Code Sails each offers different advantages depending on the angles you sail.
Before adding another sail to the inventory, think about where you spend most of your time on the water.

WE'LL COME TO YOUR BOAT
Getting the measurements right is an important part of getting the sail right.
Your local Ullman Sails team can come aboard to measure your boat, check the rig and look at your existing setup. It's an opportunity to discuss what's working, what isn't and what you'd like your new sail to achieve.
Accurate measurements help ensure the finished sail fits properly and performs as intended.
And once that new sail arrives, looking after it matters. Good UV protection, proper covers and avoiding unnecessary flogging all help extend its working life.
BEFORE YOU PLACE THAT ORDER
You don't need to arrive at the loft knowing every sailmaking term or having a complete specification in mind.
Just bring an understanding of your boat, the sailing you enjoy and what you'd like to improve.
The rest is a conversation worth having with your sailmaker.
And who knows? That little end-of-year treat might just become your favourite purchase of the season.
