The Midnight Motorway:
How Jackknife Conquered the Atlantic
Sailing with a Corinthian crew, father-and-son team Andrew and Sam Hall secured 1st in IRC 2 and 3rd Overall in the RORC Transatlantic Race. But their victory started with a legendary race against the clock.
When the team needed a new jib for the crossing, the Ullman Sails UK team sprang into action. Brad Stephens designed the sail overnight, and the loft team worked tirelessly to cut and build the Dimension Polyant GPL LiteSkin jib, finishing at 11:30 PM. To ensure the sail made the flight to Antigua, Jon Pegg drove 200 miles through the night to meet Sam on the motorway at 3:00 AM—just five hours before his 8:00 AM departure. That is the "extra mile" that defines the Ullman network.

A 3,000-mile crossing requires a versatile, high-strength quiver. Jackknife’s podium run relied on a precision-engineered inventory:
- The Main: A FiberPath Carbon Black Taffeta mainsail, designed for maximum shape retention through relentless Atlantic swells.
- The "Midnight" Jib: Built from GPL LiteSkin, this high-modulus, low-stretch headsail was the perfect tactical addition for the rigors of the race.
- The Reaching Power: A specialized Axia Code 60 for high-speed trade wind angles, optimized with a spinnaker staysail and jib staysail to maximize aerodynamic "slot" performance.
- The Headsail Suite: A full range of Race Series jibs kept the J/125 at target speeds across the entire wind spectrum.
Whether it’s a FiberPath masterpiece or a 3:00 AM motorway hand-off, we do whatever it takes to get you to the starting line. When you choose Ullman, you’re choosing a partner that is as committed to your race as you are.
